decodes, new inventions and discoveries will make huge changes to our lives. On
this page scientists give their predictions about life in the future.
Will there be schools in the future?

still go to school, but schools will be very different. There will still be
teachers, but computers will teach some lessons. Some students will stay at

of a classroom in three dimensions – or 3D. They will see their teacher and
their friends, so they will feel like they are really at school.
Will computers understand what we say to
them?
Computers will be
more intelligent. They will understand what we say, what we think and how we
feel. In the future, humans and computers will be part of huge radio network.
We will send messages from our brain to our computer and the computer will send
messages straight to our brain, without using wires. When you want to learn
something new, your computer will send the information straight to your brain.
What will clothes be like?
In a few years
there will be clothes with soft TV screens in them. You will be able to change
the pattern on your T-shirt. You will be able to show music videos on your

watch on the sleeve.
Will we have robots to help us?
In the future, we
will have lots of very clever robots called nanobots. Nanobots will be very

pictures on the television won’t be flat. They will all be in 3D. You will be
able to walk into your favourite TV programme. It will happen all around you.
What about TV channels?
TV channels will be
a thing of the past. People will choose TV programmes from a menu on their
computer. In the future, TV programmes, films, music and books will all come to
us through our computers. We will say to the computer, “I want to watch a funny
film” or “I’d like to hear some dance music.” The computer will understand us

MARK TWAIN
Mark Twain, 1
lived from 1835 to 1910, is one of America’s most famous authors. He wrote many
books, 2 The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain’s own life was 3 enough to be a book.
Twain was born in the state of Missouri, near the
Mississippi River. He 4 from a poor
family. His father died when he was twelve, 5 he had to leave school.
While he was still a boy, he worked as a riverboat pilot. He steered boats up
and down the long Mississippi River.
The Civil War, which started in 1861, made traveling
on the Mississippi impossible. Twain then went west to Nevada. There he worked
with a newspaper. In 1864 he went to California to find gold. Twain did not
have much 6 as a gold miner. He left
California to travel in Europe. Twain wrote a book about his trips around
Europe.
But the most important influence on Twain and his
books was the Mississippi River. When Twain finally settled down, he lived in a
house with a porch that 7 like the
deck of a riverboat. Huckleberry Finn, Twain’s greatest book, is about the
adventures of a boy on the Mississippi River. 8 of Twain’s books is called Life on the Mississippi.
In fact, even the name of Mark Twain comes from the
Mississippi. Mark Twain’s 9 name was
Samuel Langhorne Clemens. On the river Samuel Clemens often heard the boatmen
shout “Mark Twain”. This 10 the
water was twelve feet deep. When Samuel Clemens began to write he chose for

An American farmer wanted
to make an air trip. There was an airport close to his farm. So one morning he
came there to ask if he could make an air trip.
"You see," he
said to one of the pilots, "I have never flown before, but I would like

ten-minute trip. "Oh, it's a dollar a minute," the farmer said.
"Can't you reduce the price?" The pilot thought for a minute and then
said, "I won't take any money if you don't say a word during the whole
trip." The farmer agreed.
"By the way,"

Double Trouble
Kallu and his wife
Zahra lived in a little hut on the side of the hill. They were very poor and
they didn't have money for food or clothes. They decided to grow some
vegetables and sell them at the market, but they didn’t have enough money to
buy seeds or a spade. They only had Zahra’s gold necklace.
Zahra took off her
necklace and gave it to Kallu. There were tears in her eyes. “Sell my necklace
at the market.” she said. “You can use the money to buy the things we need.”
So Kallu sold the
necklace and bought some seeds and a spade. He came home and started to work.
While he was digging, his spade hit something in the ground. It was a large
pot. While Kallu was looking into the pot, a coin fell out of his pocket and
landed in the pot. When Kallu tried to take his coin out of the pot, he
couldn’t believe his eyes. There were now two coins in the pot.
“We’re are going to
be rich!” said Zahra happily. Zahra and Kallu put all their coins in the pot.
Soon they had a small pile of coins. Zahra jumped for joy.
“Go and buy my
necklace back” she told Kallu. “Buy us some food and new clothes, too.”
Kallu went back to
the market. He ran as fast as he could. While he was away, Zahra put a potato
into the pot, then two potatoes, then four. When Kallu came home, Zahra was sitting
on a huge pile of potatoes. When she saw Kallu, she tried to climbed down to greet him, but she slipped and fell
into the pot. Kallu tried to pull her out, but he fell into the pot too. When
Kallu and Zahra climbed out of the pot, another Kallu and another Zahra climbed
out.
“Oh, no!” said
Kallu. “Now there are two Kallus and two Zahras. What are we going to do?”
Kallu scratched his
head, but Zahra had an idea. “Let’s build a hut like ours for our new friends.”
she said. “We’ll make them a copy of everything in our hut.”
So Kallu built
another hut on the other side of the hill. Then he and Zahra put all of their
things into the pot, so that the second Kallu and Zahra had everything they
needed. The two couples became friends. They weren’t rich, but they were happy.
Zahra told Kallu to bury the pot deep in the ground.
“That’s a great
idea!” said Kallu. He smiled at Zahra and after that they were never greedy
again.

Chocolate
Would you like a piece of
chocolate? Most of us enjoy a bar of chocolate – or we like the taste of
chocolate in cakes or ice cream. However, not many of us know the history of
chocolate. Let's look back in time…
People first made
chocolate 3,000 years ago, in Central America and Mexico. They grew cacao trees
and used the beans as money, because there were no coins or banknotes then. A
turkey cost 100 cacao beans and a piece of fruit cost three beans.
At first, people only used
chocolate to make a drink. They called the drink xocolatl. This means
“bitter water” in an Aztec language because cacao beans have a very bitter
taste on their own. Later people used chocolate as an ingredient in various
dishes. They believed that chocolate was good for you, so they used chocolate
to treat some illnesses. They also learnt that chocolate will give you energy
if you are tired.
During the 16th
century, Spanish people travelled to Mexico and tasted the chocolate. They took
chocolate home with them and soon people in Europe started to use chocolate,
too. At first, only rich people could enjoy chocolate, because it was very
expensive.
In England, people visited
special chocolate shops to drink chocolate drinks. They found out that if you
add vanilla and sugar to chocolate, it tastes a lot nicer. In about 1690, a
doctor called Hans Sloane made a new drink with chocolate and milk. This drink
was sweet and tasty, so it was very popular.
Today, chocolate is one of
the most popular foods in the world. There are hundreds of different chocolate
bars and sweets. We give chocolate as gifts on special occasions. A special
treat is chocolate fondue. We heat the chocolate until it melts and then dip fruit into the
chocolate. Strawberries are delicious when they are covered in melted chocolate.
There are different kinds
of chocolate: dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate. If you like
chocolate, you will be pleased to know that dark chocolate can be healthy.
Unlike milk chocolate, dark chocolate does not have a lot of milk and sugar in
it. Dark
chocolate is good for your heart and helps your blood to move around your body.
a. Complete the facts. Write one word in each gap. (5)

Christmas is a home and family celebration in Britain. Those who live away
try to get back home. Christmas is the biggest holiday of the year. As
Christmas nears, everyone buys Christmas presents for friends and relatives.
Christmas people try to give children everything they want. Children count the
weeks, then the days to Christmas. On Christmas Eve, families and friends
gather for the festivities. Housewives are busy preparing food, and children
are sent to bed. They are told that if they don't go to sleep, Father Christmas
will not bring them any presents. Then, when they are asleep, the parents come
into their bedrooms and leave the presents near their beds, or under the

it were sunny!” The next day, by chance, it became sunny, and the farmer
planted some wheat. After a few weeks, he began to get impatient. His crop
needed rain now. He called out, “If it were rainy, it would be useful for my
wheat.” The following day, it rained.
Now he thought he could get everything
he wanted. The very next day he called out, “If it rained more, my wheat would
grow higher and higher.” The following day, it rained again.
That summer he had the biggest and best
crop he had ever had. He harvested his wheat and collected it in a big pile. He
should have been happy, but he was so greedy he called out, “If it had rained
